New chip enables full-color AR displays with high pixel yield
The new chip comes from Qiushui Semiconductor, a Chinese manufacturer focused on near-eye display technologies. The company designed the component specifically for AR glasses and similar wearable devices. This shift allows developers to move away from single-color limitations and create more immersive user experiences. The technology targets the growing market for lightweight, high-resolution augmented reality headsets.

Qiushui achieved high density by packing a 640 x 480 resolution into a volume of just 0.15 cubic centimeters. The chip maintains a pixel yield rate above 99.9999%, which is critical for minimizing dead pixels in small displays. Engineers narrowed the emission angle to plus or minus 10 degrees, which improves light efficiency and contrast. The device also operates at temperatures exceeding 140 degrees Celsius, ensuring stability in enclosed wearable frames.
The red light Wall-Plug Efficiency (WPE) is expected to exceed 20%, a key metric for battery life in portable devices. Current pixel sizes sit at 4 microns, but the company plans to shrink them to under 2 microns using proprietary lossless technology. This scaling capability allows the chip to evolve alongside semiconductor manufacturing improvements. The company also introduced the 013 red light optical engine to complement the new chip for complete AR solutions.
Qiushui Semiconductor has established a viable path for full-color Micro-LED production. The combination of high yield, narrow emission angles, and improved efficiency addresses the primary hurdles for AR adoption. This hardware enables the transition from experimental prototypes to commercially viable full-color augmented reality glasses.
