Prusa Research has begun shipping the Founder’s Edition of the INDX toolchanger, a hardware modification that transforms the CORE One 3D printer into an eight-color multi-material system. This update matters because it brings rapid color-swapping capabilities to a popular desktop platform, allowing users to print complex, multi-color objects without manual filament changes. The shift from single-color to multi-color printing expands the practical use cases for hobbyists and professionals who need varied material properties in a single build.

The core of the upgrade is the INDX carriage, which replaces the standard Nextruder on the CORE One. Bondtech invented and patented this system, which uses induction heaters to bring each nozzle to the target temperature in just a few seconds. This heating method enables some of the fastest color swap times we have seen in consumer 3D printing. The hardware mounts a rack that holds up to eight individual tool heads, each with its own nozzle and heater.

  • Toolhead Count: 8
  • Heating Technology: Induction heater
  • Waste Management: Internal tray and silicone pad wipe
  • Calibration Print: Otto, the Calibration Butterfly

The INDX carriage replaces the standard Nextruder to enable multi-color printing.

Managing the transition between colors requires strict waste control, which the INDX handles through an internal tray and a silicone pad wipe. The system purges only tiny crumbs of waste material into the tray, keeping the print area clean. Prusa published a specific calibration print called the Calibration Butterfly, or Otto, to verify the alignment of the eight nozzles. Tom's Hardware reported that their Otto sample printed perfectly on the first attempt, taking 1 hour and 14 minutes to complete.

Pricing for the conversion kits varies based on the number of tool heads included. A four-tool kit costs $749, while the eight-tool kit is priced at $999. Bondtech also offers a Development Kit for other platforms like Voron and Sovol, starting at $487.50 per toolhead. One thousand Founder’s Edition units have already shipped to early adopters. The retail version, which will include firmware upgrades and better visibility through the front grill, is expected to launch by the end of July.

Prusa requested that reviewers not conduct a full evaluation of the Founder’s Edition, noting it is a preview of the final product. The retail INDX will be a more refined version with specific hardware tweaks. We looked at earlier multi-color 3D printing solutions while tracking these modular upgrades. The confirmed details show a clear path from the limited prototype to a broader retail release.
