PHP Critical Vulnerability Takes Down Government Websites, NSA Urges Immediate Patching

A critical PHP vulnerability has taken down government websites globally. The NSA urges immediate patching or offline status. Node.js, LiteLLM, and eMudhra also face major security incidents.

Several critical security incidents have caused chaos in the global digital landscape, prompting urgent responses from government bodies and corporate entities. These events are significant in nature and pose an imminent threat to the integrity and availability of data for organisations that are dependent on standard web tools and cloud services. Users and administrators are advised to urgently patch and segregate the systems at risk.

NSA urges immediate updates or offline status for systems using PHP

A critical security issue in PHP, an important web development language, is responsible for the biggest hit to the internet. This vulnerability was discovered by the US National Security Agency, which has called for all PHP users to urgently apply the updates. Users who cannot patch the systems are advised to keep servers at risk offline until the issue can be resolved. This vulnerability is serious enough to have taken down government websites worldwide.

This week there have been various other software ecosystems being attacked with their specific issues. Node.js has pushed an update to patch 4 high-severity issues in the program. These include vulnerabilities that allow remote code execution as well as bypass of TLS verification.

In addition, the open source LLM proxy LiteLLM was affected by the supply chain attacks on PyPI, Docker Hub and GHCR. The malicious payloads pushed to the repositories include info-stealers for cloud credentials and RATs (Remote Access Trojans).

Further, Indian certificate authority, eMudhra, has been breached and the attacker has managed to obtain a private key and issue fraudulent certificates. This breach has the potential to be even bigger than Heartbleed in the eyes of security professionals as it concerns trust infrastructure. Recently, the TiDB Cloud breach occurred, Plex Media Server four vulnerabilities called Plex2Shell have been exploited, and a zero-day vulnerability in BeyondTrust Remote Support has been found.

The events listed here represent a situation where the software supply chain and runtime are highly interconnected and fragile. It is essential for the organisations to ensure the integrity of their dependencies and remain vigilant about unauthorised access to critical infrastructure. The immediate response is to apply the available patches and isolate the vulnerable systems to prevent further compromise.
