AMD submits kernel patches for an official Ryzen overclocking driver for Linux, exposing PPT, TDC, and EDC controls via sysfs without requiring Windows.

AMD submits official Ryzen overclocking driver for Linux, ending Windows-only control

based desktop PC DIY'ers can now fiddle with their chips, without ever having to leave Linux. is going to patch in the official overclocking driver to the Linux kernel. This is a big deal because it means you no longer have to rely on -only Ryzen Master to control power and performance settings on Linux based PCs.

AMD AOD kernel module exposes power limits to Linux sysfs

The AMD Overclocking Driver, or AOD, is the new piece of software coming to Linux. However, it's not a graphical application, it's a kernel module. This driver can talk to the system hardware via the Windows Management Instrumentation, WMI. It then makes these settings available in Linux via the typical sysfs.

You can now tweak important power settings, like Package Power Tracking (PPT), Thermal Design Current (TDC), and Electrical Design Current (EDC). You also have the ability to turn Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) on and off. All of these changes are set using platform firmware commands. You will need to reboot the system after changing any power / current limits.

AMD doesn't currently have an official version of Ryzen Master for Linux. The kernel patches are just the basic interface for this. There could be a full Ryzen Master clone, a graphical application, for Linux in the future, written by third parties. We've been following Ryzen a lot here, like we did in the past with AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Failure Points.

AMD submitted the patches to the Linux kernel mailing list. You can see the code for review on Kernel.org. PHoronix has some of the specifics for this submission. This is just at the patch submission stage, not yet part of the mainline kernel.
