Open-source tool tracks noise levels for GPUs and power supplies

Lowell K. Wood IV created the Coil Whine Database to collect and share noise reports for graphics cards, power supplies, and AIO water coolers. The project lives on GitHub and accepts new data through online forms or direct Pull Requests. It provides a centralized place to track acoustic issues across different hardware models.

Noise Levels

  • Level 0: Completely silent
  • Level 1: Detectable only when close to the component
  • Level 2: Audible at normal desktop sitting position under high system load
  • Level 3: Very obvious sound during gaming or specific loads
  • Level 4: Abnormal noise audible even in standby state

The database sorts noise into five distinct levels to help users understand what they might hear. Level 0 means the component is completely silent. Level 1 requires you to be very close to the part to hear anything. Level 2 is audible at a normal desk position during high system loads. Level 3 produces very obvious sound during gaming or specific tasks. Level 4 indicates abnormal noise that is audible even when the system is in standby.

To ensure statistical accuracy, the database requires a minimum of five feedback entries for a specific model before displaying public ratios. Users can tag their reports with specific load conditions, such as FurMark stress tests or unlimited FPS gaming. This detail helps others compare noise levels under similar usage scenarios.
