Buyers looking for an affordable entry-level graphics card now face a 14% cost increase in just two months. This shift forces gamers to reconsider their budget builds as the value proposition of this older architecture weakens against newer alternatives.

Budget buyers face higher costs for older hardware while rivals improve

NVIDIA restarted production of the RTX 3060 12GB in June 2024 to address supply shortages in the entry-level segment. The card relies on the older Ampere architecture manufactured using Samsung's 8nm process. It retains 12GB of VRAM, which remains its primary technical differentiator in a market where 8GB is becoming the standard for budget GPUs.

Pricing data from Germany shows the ASUS RTX 3060 12GB Dual V2 rising from 333 EUR to 379 EUR. In China, prices for various models range from 3199 CNY (around $475) to 3449 CNY (around $512). The price hike stems from rising memory chip costs and ongoing production constraints. The card only holds an advantage in workloads that strictly require more than 8GB of video memory.

Newer competitors offer better performance for similar or lower prices. The RTX 4060 8GB delivers higher frame rates with comparable pricing, while the RTX 5050 8GB outperforms the 3060 in all tested metrics.
