Valve has removed a free horror game called Beyond The Dark from Steam after players discovered it contained malware. The game was originally listed as Rodent Race but was transformed after a hijacked developer account uploaded the malicious version.
Malware targeted crypto wallets and personal data
The malware was hidden inside the UnityPlayer.dll file. It stole personal data and searched for cryptocurrency wallet extensions such as MetaMask. It also downloaded additional tools onto infected systems.
Players who installed the game are advised to delete it, run a full antivirus scan, update their passwords, and move any cryptocurrency funds to new wallets.
The incident was reported by Eric Parker. Valve has not commented on how the developer account was compromised or whether additional affected users have been identified.
