Silicon Motion PCIe 6.0 SSD Controller Neptune Launches Late 2027

Silicon Motion is planning to release its next-generation client SSD controller, codenamed Neptune, at the end of 2027. The company also confirmed that its enterprise PCIe Gen6 controller, model SM8466, will arrive in 2026. The schedule outlines the release of Silicon Motion's client-side Neptune controller in late 2027 and its enterprise SM8466 model in 2026, marking the company's roadmap for next-generation storage technology.

New SM2524XT client controller features four cores and supports 4.8 GT/s NAND interfaces

The client-side Neptune controller carries the official model number SM2524XT. It features four CPU cores and supports a NAND interface speed of 4.8 GT/s. Silicon Motion targets roughly a 25% increase in random I/O performance compared to its previous generation controllers. The new design also aims for a 10% to 15% improvement in performance per watt.

Nelson Duann, SVP of Client & Automotive Storage at Silicon Motion, highlighted significant challenges ahead for the storage market. He projected that severe NAND shortages will worsen in 2027 due to intense demand from AI data centers. Duann noted that while bit supply will increase, it will not match the expected growth in demand.

Silicon Motion reported strong financial results recently, with Q1 2026 sales reaching $342.1 million. This represents a 105% year-over-year increase driven by high-end controller sales and module maker demand.
