The client-side Neptune controller carries the official model number SM2524XT. It features four CPU cores and supports a NAND interface speed of 4.8 GT/s. Silicon Motion targets roughly a 25% increase in random I/O performance compared to its previous generation controllers. The new design also aims for a 10% to 15% improvement in performance per watt.
Nelson Duann, SVP of Client & Automotive Storage at Silicon Motion, highlighted significant challenges ahead for the storage market. He projected that severe NAND shortages will worsen in 2027 due to intense demand from AI data centers. Duann noted that while bit supply will increase, it will not match the expected growth in demand.
Silicon Motion reported strong financial results recently, with Q1 2026 sales reaching $342.1 million.
