PC gamers running Silent Hill 2 Remake on high-end systems can now reduce severe frame stuttering with a new community patch. The '21 Sacraments Patch' targets the Unreal Engine 5 ray tracing geometry build scheduling that causes the game's infamous traversal hitches. This optimization matters because it smooths out the frame delivery without requiring players to lower their graphical settings or switch to a less powerful graphics card.

Experimental patch targets Unreal Engine 5 ray tracing geometry for smoother gameplay

The mod was created by developer bigbullet3 and currently sits at version 0.5.2. It works by imposing a soft budget of 50,000 primitives per frame to distribute the GPU workload more evenly. Our testing focused on the Steam version of the game using an Core i7-14700K processor and an RTX 4090 graphics card at 1440p resolution.

Testing revealed that the mod increases the 0.1% low FPS from 45.8 to 69.8, which represents a 52.4% improvement in minimum frame rates. The Adaptive STDDEV dropped from 59.8 to 13.0, indicating a 78.3% reduction in frame time variance. CapFrameX detected approximately 0.21 seconds of stuttering in the vanilla version, compared to just 0.03 seconds with the mod installed. This translates to an 86% reduction in the total time spent stuttering during gameplay.

The developer warns that the patch is still an experimental beta and its effectiveness may vary depending on hardware and graphics settings. The mod was developed and tested on a particularly powerful configuration featuring an 7 9800X3D, GeForce RTX 5090, and 64 GB of RAM. Players should expect performance benefits to differ on systems that do not match this high-end specification.

When we covered the last Silent Hill 2 Remake update, several of the same balance and stability themes came up. This new patch addresses those lingering performance issues by directly modifying how the engine handles ray tracing geometry. The mod is available for users who want to maintain high visual fidelity while eliminating the frame drops that disrupt the horror experience.
