Nextcloud Launches Euro-Office Suite on June 9 as OnlyOffice Fork

Euro-Office, the European coalition's alternative to Microsoft Office and LibreOffice, is set to launch on June 9. The release marks a decisive break from OnlyOffice after an eight-year partnership ended over licensing disputes. Nextcloud leads the effort alongside partners like IONOS and XWiki, aiming to deliver a fully open-source office suite that respects user sovereignty.

The new suite forks OnlyOffice's codebase under the AGPLv3 license. This legal maneuver allows Euro-Office developers to modify and distribute the software without restrictive branding clauses that previously governed their collaboration. The coalition rebuilt core components in English, replacing Russian-language comments and improving automated testing pipelines ahead of the stable release.

Euro-Office targets web-based document editing with a focus on browser performance. The consortium claims the suite delivers vastly superior speed and responsiveness compared to LibreOffice when running in modern browsers. The Euro-Office suite aims to reduce typical performance delays found in competing cloud-based office applications.

Partner companies plan to roll out Euro-Office to their customer bases later this year. Nextcloud, IONOS, and XWiki will integrate the software into their respective platforms, offering enterprise users a self-hosted alternative to proprietary office suites.
