Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, has stated that he will not direct a potential Final Fantasy VI Remake. In a recent interview with GamerBraves, Hamaguchi explained his reasoning. He prefers to support a new young creator for such a project instead of taking the lead himself.
Hamaguchi explains his decision
Hamaguchi has been involved with the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy for ten years. He noted that a Final Fantasy VI Remake would face unique challenges, including recreating 14 characters and handling an ensemble narrative. He also clarified that he did not take many elements from Final Fantasy VI for the VII Remake project, as he wanted to focus on the original FFVII.
Hamaguchi expressed his admiration for both Final Fantasy VI and VII, saying they inspired him to become a game creator. He described them as the origin of his creativity. However, he believes that the Final Fantasy VII Remake series should remain centered on its own source material.
Square Enix has not announced any plans for a Final Fantasy VI Remake. Hamaguchi's comments suggest that if such a project moves forward, it would likely be led by a different director. The company has not confirmed any development or release timeline for a remake of the classic RPG.
