ChatGPT Ad Test Expands to Japan and Four Other Countries

OpenAI will start testing advertisements in ChatGPT in Japan within weeks. The company announced the expansion of its ad test program to five new countries. The test previously ran only in the United States since February.

Ads appear for free and Go plan users

The new regions include Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Korea, and Mexico. Ads will appear for logged-in adult users on the free and Go plans. OpenAI stated that ads will not affect ChatGPT's responses and that user conversations are protected from advertisers.

The ad test rollout in these countries is expected to begin within weeks from the announcement date of May 7, 2025. OpenAI has not confirmed an exact launch date for each region.

The expansion marks a significant step in OpenAI's monetization strategy for ChatGPT. The company is exploring advertising as a way to support the free tier of its popular AI chatbot. The initial US test began in February 2025.
