AMD confirms FSR 4 upscaling coming to Vulkan after 19-month absence

recently announced that their FSR 4 will now support the Vulkan API. This means the upscaler will now also be available to the gaming community and development teams that use the open standard API. This announcement comes over 19 months after the technology's initial release.

Native support ends reliance on community workarounds for Linux users

It's a much-needed update for Linux gamers that has been lacking for quite some time. Previously, they had to use community-based solutions in order to get similar features. This update is a big step forward for users on open-source platforms that didn't previously have native access to AMD's latest upscaling tech.

During an announcement on October 20, 2026, senior VP at AMD, Jack Huynh, made the announcement of the upcoming support. Huynh explained that it will give another option to game developers to implement FSR into their games. The FSR 4 suite itself was first introduced on March 6, 2025.

It launched alongside the RX 9070 series hardware. Back then, the ML upscaler was only available through the DX12 API.

It's a return to form for the FSR brand itself. It's worth mentioning that past versions like FSR 1, 2, and 3.1 did offer Vulkan support. However, in Huynh's announcement, he only mentioned FSR in general.

It's unclear if it'll cover all the components like Frame Generation or even Ray Regeneration when it comes to Vulkan. As such, it's hard to know the full extent of the update. We'll just have to wait for more technical details to come in.

In the past, community projects like OptiScaler had tried to make the connection between DX12 and Vulkan. But having native support will ensure a more stable experience. As for an exact date of the Vulkan update, AMD didn't mention it.

They also didn't specifically address Linux support. Keep in mind that Vulkan is mainly the graphics API for Linux. It's likely it'll come in a driver update. It'll finally bring parity to the FSR ecosystem.
