Windows 11 26H1 Build 28000.2173 Adds Xbox Mode and File Explorer Updates

Microsoft has released a new 11 build, version 26H1, under build number 28000.2173. The update introduces an Xbox mode for Windows 11 PCs, including laptops, desktops, and tablets. This feature brings gaming-focused functionality directly to the operating system.

Xbox mode brings gaming features to Windows 11 PCs.

File Explorer now supports additional archive formats: uu, cpio, xar, and NuGet Packages (nupkg). Haptic feedback effects are available on compatible input devices such as Surface Slim Pen 2, Pen 3.0, Pen 2, and select mice like Logitech MX Master 4. The FAT32 format limit has been increased from 32GB to 2TB. Other changes include a redesigned voice typing on the touch keyboard, a new Drop Tray with a smaller peek view, and an Arabic 101 Legacy keyboard layout.

The build is available worldwide as a Release Preview update. Microsoft has not disclosed pricing for the update, as it is a standard Windows 11 feature update.

Microsoft claims several performance improvements in this build. Viewing storage information for large volumes in Settings is faster. Startup app launch performance has improved after device startup. Delivery Optimization now uses less memory, reducing the likelihood of unexpectedly high memory usage. The update also includes reliability fixes for Windows Hello Face and Fingerprint, explorer.exe at sign-in and taskbar, and storage performance for large volumes.

Microsoft has not confirmed the exact release date for the final version of Windows 11 26H1. The company continues to test features like taskbar agents for Microsoft 365 Copilot Researcher and policy-based removal of preinstalled apps for Enterprise and Education editions.
