Unitree announced the GD01 on May 12, presenting it as a production-ready manned mecha. The robot stands roughly 11 feet tall and resembles a humanoid structure with two arms and two legs. Unitree describes the device as a civilian vehicle or transportation platform.
Robot switches between bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion to maintain balance
The GD01 features a cage-like upper body that provides space for a pilot. The seat shown in demonstration footage does not adjust to the robot's horizontal position. The robot can switch between bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion. It drops onto its back to move on all fours if it risks losing balance.
The starting price for the GD01 is 3.9 million yuan CNY (about $0.57). Demo footage shows the robot effortlessly knocking over a wall of stacked concrete blocks. Unitree claims the machine is ready for production, but prototype construction details suggest otherwise. Parts of the metal frame appear padded with pieces of bicycle tire.
Existing specialized machinery such as excavators and forklifts handles heavy stone and pallet transport more effectively. Wheel loaders and other specialized vehicles suit rough terrain better than the GD01. The practical utility of the mecha for transport tasks remains questionable given these alternatives.
