DDR5 2x16GB Memory Prices Surge 5x to Over $500 Amid Production Constraints

DDR5 memory prices have surged five to ten times, rising from $100 to over $500. Major manufacturers like Samsung and SK Hynix prioritize AI memory, limiting DDR supply.

DDR5 2x16GB Memory Prices Surge 5x to Over $500 Amid Production Constraints

Memory chip prices have surged dramatically over the past year. A standard 2x16GB DDR5 kit now costs over $500. This represents a five to ten times increase from the $100 price point recorded last year.

Samsung invests billions in new fabs with production starting in 2031

The three major manufacturers controlling 90 to 95 percent of the global market are prioritizing high-bandwidth memory for artificial intelligence. This strategic shift has constrained the supply of conventional DDR, LPDDR, and GDDR chips. Samsung reported an eightfold increase in first-quarter net profit. SK Hynix and Micron also saw profits grow by more than five times.

Production capacity remains tight despite the price hikes. plans to increase its 2026 wafer output by approximately five percent to 7.93 million wafers. SK Hynix will raise its production by about eight percent to 6.48 million wafers. Micron will keep its output flat at 3.6 million wafers.

Samsung is investing $260 billion to build six new wafer fabs in Yongin, South Korea. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year. The new facilities are not expected to start production until 2031. This long timeline suggests that current supply constraints will persist for several years.

Analysts project that the memory shortage and elevated prices could last until 2027 or even 2030. Some estimates suggest the top three vendors could generate one trillion yuan in combined net profit this year. These figures remain unconfirmed projections based on current market trends.
