In our last coverage, we talked about the AMD FSR Ray Reconstruction 2.0 Cuts. This is our latest development about AMD where we see a flood of first-gen AMD EPYC server CPUs on China's 2nd-hand market with rock bottom prices nearly 0 price. It's an excellent chance to grab some high core CPUs for lunch money budget if you are looking for home labs. If you are interested to go for some low powered virtualization setups this is the time to grab enterprise CPUs that used to be priced in thousands of dollars.

Enterprise processors once priced at thousands now sell for pennies in China

The lead CPU is the AMD EPYC 7401 which is a 24 core 48 thread CPU with older gen Zen. It uses an SP3 socket with 8 channel DDR4 memory and can be used with older servers. The base clock for this CPU is 2.0 GHz, and boost clock 3.0 GHz. It comes with 64 MB L3 cache.

Specifications

  • Cores/Threads: 24 Cores / 48 Threads
  • Base Clock: 2.0 GHz
  • Boost Clock: 3.0 GHz
  • L3 Cache: 64 MB
  • Memory Support: 8-channel DDR4

The price tag for these CPUs is now in a very different range than their initial release price in 2017 at $1,850. So now you can get 24 cores EPYC 7401 for ~59 CNY or ~$8.82. If you want to go for a cheaper option like 16 cores EPYC 7351P they are listed at 35 CNY (~$5.23).

Or if you want a higher clock variant like 7371 they are at 100 CNY (~$14.95). The sellers have hundreds of working retail units.

They are not good for gaming purposes as single core performance is way below modern desktop CPUs. This is more for home server purpose, code compiling, VM on multiple VMs. As much as these CPUs are cheap the SP3 server boards are still pricey so for new users the overall system price saving won't be too much.
