South Korean DRAM export unit prices reached $92,183 per kilogram in late August 2024. This figure represents the value of raw DRAM chips, excluding fully assembled memory modules. The price reflects a 401% increase compared to the same period last year.

The cost escalation has pushed DRAM valuations above traditional commodities. One kilogram of DRAM now holds value equivalent to approximately 620 grams of gold. By weight, DRAM is worth 1.53 times that of platinum and 41.7 times that of silver.

This pricing structure marks a dramatic departure from historical trends. DRAM export prices have risen 12.5 times over the past three years. In contrast, gold prices increased by only 2.4 times during the same period.

Industry analysis attributes this squeeze to capacity constraints fueled by AI data center demand. High-bandwidth memory requirements for AI servers are consuming significant production resources. This reallocation of manufacturing capacity drives up prices for standard DRAM products.

The market reality is that storage costs have decoupled from typical consumer electronics trends. Hardware budgets must now account for these elevated component prices. The gap between memory costs and traditional commodity values shows no immediate sign of narrowing.
