UL (Futuremark) is preparing a new benchmark test for its 3DMark software suite, focusing on next-generation path tracing workloads. The upcoming test will support native 4K resolution and integrate AI upscaling alongside frame generation techniques. The update introduces path tracing to measure real-time ray-tracing performance more accurately than earlier raster-based benchmarks.

Native 4K path tracing workloads provide standardized metrics for evaluating current GPU capabilities under heavy rendering loads.
Thermal Grizzly has emerged as the first sponsor of this new benchmark, showcasing a teaser at Computex in Taipei. Thermal Grizzly sponsors the benchmark to showcase its cooling solutions and thermal interface materials for high-end PCs. The sponsor highlights the importance of effective cooling for maintaining performance during intensive ray-tracing workloads.

Current 3DMark ray-tracing tests such as Speed Way and Port Royal operate at 2560×1440 resolution, while Steel Nomad handles native 4K raster tasks. The new test will introduce AI upscaling and frame generation workloads that push GPU compute units beyond traditional rendering pipelines. The benchmark enables detailed performance comparisons by testing native 4K resolution alongside AI upscaling techniques.
The benchmark is expected to provide clearer insights into how next-generation GPUs handle path tracing compared to older ray-tracing methods. By incorporating AI upscaling, the test can simulate higher-resolution outputs from lower internal renders, reflecting real-world gaming trends. UL (Futuremark) has not yet announced a release date or pricing for the new 3DMark benchmark. UL will share additional information about the test as it moves toward a public beta release.
