Microsoft released Visual Studio Code 1.123 alongside Build 2026. The update focuses on improving AI-assisted development workflows. Developers can now sync chat histories, touched files, repository contexts, and pull requests across machines using a GitHub account.
New /chronicle command and Research Agent debut
Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's free, open-source code editor. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Version 1.123 is available globally starting May 2025.
A new /chronicle command lets users query past coding sessions with natural language. The editor also improves network-dependent operations with sandbox retry and fallback mechanisms. Users can drag, drop, and pin multiple agent sessions side-by-side.
Security delay for extension auto-updates
The update introduces a Research Agent (/research) that generates Markdown reports from web searches, codebase analysis, and GitHub data. Screenshot capture tools now include Area Screenshots and Full Page Screenshots. The address bar has been revamped with favorite pages and tab management.
To improve security, Microsoft added a two-hour delay on third-party extension auto-updates. This gives users time to review changes before they apply. The feature aims to reduce unexpected disruptions from extension updates.
This release builds on Microsoft's ongoing investment in developer tools. VS Code remains one of the most popular code editors worldwide. The new features aim to streamline both individual and collaborative coding tasks.
