A developer known as NullMoth has released an unofficial graphics driver that brings hardware-accelerated Metal 3 support to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 cards on macOS 15 Sequoia. This update matters because it allows users to run modern Mac applications and games with GPU acceleration on hardware that Apple does not officially support. Buyers who rely on macOS for creative work or gaming can now access features that were previously limited to software rendering.
NullMoth releases experimental driver enabling Metal 3 support for RTX 5060 on macOS 15
The driver project combines NVIDIA's open GPU kernel modules with Mesa's NVK Vulkan driver and a custom shader translator. This technical stack enables the translation of Metal commands into Vulkan while converting Apple's shader format into SPIR-V. The system supports hardware-accelerated desktop rendering, Metal applications, and GPU compute workloads according to the developer.
- Driver Compatibility: macOS 15 Sequoia
- Graphics API Support: Metal 3 acceleration
- Underlying Technology: NVIDIA open GPU kernel modules, Mesa NVK Vulkan driver, custom shader translator
- Supported GPU Series: GTX 16, RTX 20, RTX 30, RTX 40, RTX 50
We validated the driver on an RTX 5060 paired with an Intel Core Ultra 5 225F processor and a B860 motherboard. The project's device table covers NVIDIA Turing and newer GPUs, including GeForce GTX 16, RTX 20, RTX 30, RTX 40, and RTX 50 series. An auxiliary tool named 1401 helps configure OpenCore installations for this driver, simplifying the setup process for users.
The project remains experimental and requires changes to macOS security settings to load its components. We have been tracking GeForce RTX 5060 closely, as seen in our earlier coverage on the Palit GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB. This driver provides a functional path for hardware acceleration on supported NVIDIA cards, though users must navigate the experimental nature of the software.
