Steam Adds Guest Checkout and Custom Wishlist Categories

Valve has overhauled the Steam wishlist and gifting systems to reduce friction for buyers and simplify gift management. These changes matter because they remove the requirement for a Steam account to complete purchases and streamline how users organize and share game lists. Shoppers can now buy games without creating an account, while gifters gain precise control over recipient details and regional pricing visibility.

The platform update introduces custom categories for wishlists, allowing users to sort titles by genre, priority, or gifting needs. Wishlist search now includes autocomplete functionality to help users find games faster. Steam also highlights available demos for wishlisted games and notifies users if a demo becomes available after the initial wishlist addition.

Hovering over a game capsule in the wishlist now displays a microtrailer for quick previewing. The checkout process enables guest purchases for all games, meaning users do not need a Steam account to buy titles. Gifts can be sent directly to an email address if the recipient's Steam account name is unknown, removing the need for Steam friendship to send gifts.

Unclaimed gifts are automatically refunded to the sender after 30 days. Checkout displays the price in the recipient's region to prevent confusion caused by regional pricing differences. Users can send digital gift cards or games directly from a shared wishlist link, and these shared links pre-populate the recipient's information in the cart for givers.

This update focuses on usability improvements for wishlists and gifting mechanics rather than backend infrastructure adjustments. The changes are now live for all users on the Steam platform.
