Prusa Research introduced a new open-source ColorMix engine for PrusaSlicer and EasyPrint. The update enables full spectrum color printing by visually blending FDM filaments to create an endless color palette. The update enables users to achieve richer colors in their prints while reducing the need for numerous filament spools.

New beta release enables multi-filament color blending with reduced waste

The tool uses five filament colors (CMYKW) and relies on halftoning techniques similar to paper printing. PrusaSlicer 3.0 will simplify the workflow, but the feature currently ships in beta version 2.9.6. Users can apply the engine immediately through the available beta release.

Testing showed a standard 3D Benchy took over seven hours on a Prusa MK4 with an MMU3. The print generated 66 grams of waste material during that time. A Prusa XL toolchanger completed the same job in two hours and 46 minutes while producing only 22 grams of waste.

This release incorporates adjustments to improve usability and workflow efficiency for color mixing tasks. Full Spectrum colors can show obvious banding, especially with opaque materials. We doubt this method replaces individual spools for precise color matching anytime soon due to the extra time required.

PrusaSlicer 3.0 is expected to make ColorMix easier to use across different printer models. The beta version 2.9.6 already supports the new engine. The updated software is currently available for users to evaluate color mixing capabilities on their existing 3D printers.

The announcement positions Prusa Research ahead of upcoming hardware like the INDX system. The company continues to improve its open-source ecosystem with features that reduce material waste and expand color options for FDM printers.
