Modder adds full path tracing to 27-year-old Grand Theft Auto 2

A community modder has transformed Grand Theft Auto 2 into a modern ray-tracing showcase. This project demonstrates how RTX Remix can breathe new life into classic titles that lack native hardware support. Players with compatible graphics cards can now experience dynamic lighting and reflections in the 1999 open-world game.

RTX Remix mod updates 1999 game with dynamic lighting

The mod was created by a user known as gebdag and utilizes the RTX Remix framework. It replaces the original fixed-function lighting with full path-traced illumination. This change introduces realistic light bounces, shadows, and reflections that were impossible in the original release.

  • Rendering Technology: NVIDIA RTX Remix with full path tracing
  • Display Support: 16:9 aspect ratio
  • Performance Feature: Frame Generation
  • Minimum OS: 10
  • Recommended GPU: RTX 4070 or faster

Technical enhancements include support for Frame Generation to help reach 60 FPS. The project also fixes display handling for 16:9 aspect ratios to prevent visual clipping. Users must run Windows 10 or later and own an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU to operate the mod.

RTX Remix Plus adds a dynamic time-of-day system that shifts lighting conditions throughout the game. Textures now use emissive maps to make objects like streetlights and vehicle headlights glow naturally. Dynamic events such as fires, explosions, and gunfire cast real-time light onto the environment. We recommend a GeForce RTX 4070 or faster card for the best visual experience.
