Microsoft has introduced a new capability for IT support teams that allows them to access Windows devices without requiring the end user to be present at the screen. This unattended remote help feature lets helpdesk staff sign in directly to the Windows login interface to resolve issues. The change matters because it removes the friction of waiting for an employee to unlock their machine or log in manually. Support staff can now troubleshoot security policies or software conflicts immediately, preserving the user's existing session in a locked state during the intervention.

Helpdesk staff can now access Windows login screens without user presence
The feature, officially named Remote Help Windows Unattended Support with Remote Sign-In, is part of the Intune Suite service release 2608. It targets x64-based Windows devices that are enrolled in Microsoft Intune and joined to Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft restricts this functionality to physical, corporate-owned devices to maintain security boundaries for unattended access. The update is now available globally as part of the August 2026 service release for eligible licensing tiers.
To enable these unattended sessions, the target device must have the Azure Virtual Desktop Agent and the Azure Virtual Desktop Agent Bootloader installed. The Intune Management Extension (IME) is also a strict requirement to allow the remote support tool to operate without local user interaction. Administrators must ensure that Remote Desktop is enabled on the target devices before attempting to initiate a remote help session. These components work together to authenticate the support agent and establish a secure connection to the login screen.
Access to this feature requires an Intune Suite subscription, the Remote Help standalone add-on, or eligible Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 licenses. The update arrives alongside other enterprise management improvements in the August 2026 release cycle. This release solidifies the remote troubleshooting workflow for organizations that rely on Intune for device management.
Microsoft confirmed the availability of unattended remote sign-in as a standard capability for supported Windows versions. The feature is fully documented in the Intune Suite service release notes for version 2608. Support teams can now deploy this tool to reduce downtime for remote workers who cannot physically sit at their desks. The implementation relies on existing Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure to ensure secure, auditable access to corporate devices.
