Microsoft has acknowledged a long-standing issue in Windows 11 where Windows Update can downgrade GPU drivers. The problem has existed since 2021. The company is now working on a fix that uses a new system with two-part HWID and CHIDs to better target GPU driver updates.
New targeting system uses HWID and CHIDs
The fix will initially roll out to some PCs in April 2026. A full rollout to all Windows 11 systems is expected by Q4 2026. Only new device display drivers will benefit from the update. Existing drivers may still cause downgrades.

The update will be applied globally. Microsoft has not confirmed the exact timing for the full rollout beyond the Q4 2026 target.
The issue has been a known problem for several years. The new targeting system aims to prevent Windows Update from incorrectly replacing newer GPU drivers with older ones. This change should improve the driver update experience for users.
