Micron has shared its new-gen memory roadmap. The company has aims to serve the server/data center market with 1TB DIMM capacity. This helps get rid of the multiple stick requirements in high-end systems.
Micron details next-gen memory specs including 1TB capacity and double bandwidth
They are also promising to double the available bandwidth as compared to the existing DDR5 standards. This should be noted by the Data center operators, as such improvements come with a lead time. Mass production is not expected before H2 2027.
DDR6 RDIMM Roadmap Specifications
- Bandwidth: More than 2x DDR5
- Single DIMM Capacity: 1TB
- Architecture: 6F² cell architecture
- Process Node: 1δ (1-Delta)
- Bit Density Improvement: Approx. 20%-25%
Micron has unveiled these goals at 2026 OCP Summit. Apart from this, they have also shared their LPDDR6, HBM, and G11 NAND product lines. In addition, Micron has confirmed that they will not be shifting towards 4F2 scaling paths (as some of their rivals have).
Instead, they will continue their 6F2 cell architecture. This will help the company offer 1-delta process node which can help increase the bit density by ~20% – 25% compared to the predecessor.
"Micron announced its next-generation storage technology roadmap at the 2026 OCP Summit. The product line includes four product lines: DDR6, LPDDR6, HBM and G11 NAND," mentioned the company. They also made it clear that these are their goal numbers.
They added, "It should be noted that this time Micron announced the data of bandwidth, capacity, energy efficiency, which are the target data in the roadmap stage. The specific specifications need to wait for the standard to be finalized and customer platform verification."
With DDR6 RDIMM, the bandwidth is said to be more than double than DDR5 modules. Similarly, LPDDR6 is expected to offer more than 35% increase in energy efficiency than LPDDR5. However, there was no word on the consumer-grade DDR6 product roadmap on this occasion. (We checked Modder Overclocks Laptop DDR5 to 7800. Also, we have been monitoring Micron launches)
The company plans to start mass production of DDR6 from H2 2027. This will happen in the US. Further, market availability for these products is slated for 2027 as well.
To be clear, the company will focus on the server/data center segment at first. The final specs are not yet final as the standards are finalized and customer platforms are getting verified.
