Micron CEO blames customer price pressure for memory shortage

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated that certain customers drove pricing significantly down in the industry, causing prices to drop to one-third of their previous levels in 2023. This aggressive pricing strategy forced manufacturers to lose money on every unit sold. The company told some of these aggressive customers that such behavior was not constructive for the long-term health of the supply chain.

The root cause of the current shortage lies in the shutdown of industry investments in new production capacity during 2023 due to poor margins. Building new fabrication plants requires long lead times, meaning the industry cannot quickly ramp up supply to meet current demand. Micron is now investing up to $200 billion in manufacturing and research to expand capacity, including new facilities in Idaho and New York.

The shortage is expected to persist into 2027 as the industry works through the backlog of required infrastructure projects. Apple has already raised prices on Mac and iPad models by up to $200 in response to the surge in memory costs. This trend highlights how upstream component shortages directly impact the final retail price of consumer electronics.

Micron leadership emphasizes that the previous cycle of low prices was unsustainable and led to underinvestment in critical infrastructure. The company is now focusing on restoring healthy margins to fund future growth. Consumers and businesses should expect memory-related costs to remain elevated as the market rebalances.
