Huawei MateBook Pro S debuts Kirin XE90 with 23% performance boost

Huawei introduced two new laptop models and matching processors on July 29, 2024, targeting users who prioritize portability and battery life. The company aims to reduce the weight of professional laptops while extending runtime for mobile workers. These devices debut with the new Kirin XE90 and Kirin X90 Plus chips, which promise significant efficiency gains over previous generations.

New laptop weighs 798 grams and ships August 5

The MateBook Pro S serves as the showcase for the Kirin XE90 processor. This 14-inch all-metal laptop weighs just 798 grams and measures 11.9 millimeters thick. The Kirin XE90 chip delivers a 23 percent improvement in single-core performance and a 25 percent boost in energy efficiency compared to the standard Kirin X90. It also increases NPU compute power by 40 percent while maintaining a 20W thermal design power.

The second device, the MateBook Fold, utilizes the Kirin X90 Plus processor. It features an 18-inch OLED screen with 3.3K resolution, making it the largest dual-layer OLED flexible display in the world. The foldable laptop weighs 1.16 kilograms and reaches a thickness of 7.3 millimeters when unfolded. Huawei claims the screen uses the largest UTG non-Newtonian fluid toughened layer available, which improves impact resistance by 90 percent.

The MateBook Pro S includes a battery with 10 percent high-silicon content, enabling over 18 hours of continuous 1080p video playback. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 with four antennas, marking the first time a thin-and-light laptop offers this connectivity. The HarmonyOS PC ecosystem currently supports more than 19,000 applications for office, entertainment, and gaming tasks. Specific hardware specifications for the Kirin X90 Plus remain unpublished by the source.

Both the MateBook Pro S and MateBook Fold are scheduled for global release on August 5, 2024. Huawei has not yet disclosed pricing information for either device. The launch establishes a new baseline for lightweight computing and foldable display durability in the PC market.
