In a recent update regarding Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, third party sources estimate the game has already exceeded 6 million digital preorders across the globe, as of October 13. The large preorder numbers indicate a surge in unprecedented consumer appetite, far surpassing any previous metrics in the industry. These statistics provide high expectations for week one sales success. For purchasers and investors, it's important to emphasize that this is exclusively digital preorders, and it excludes any physical retail preorders.

Third-party estimates show PlayStation securing 74% of global digital preorders

For console platforms specifically, digital preorder numbers have substantial discrepancies between brands. When comparing early orders for GTA 6 across brands, PlayStation has secured the overwhelming majority. Sensor Tower predicts PlayStation to hold 74% of the game, or 4.51 million preorders (around $441 million in sales).

Xbox comes in a distant second with the remaining 26% in digital preorders. That's 1.57 million preorders, with $153 million in potential sales.

For US markets, Grand Theft Auto 6 has already significantly surpassed previous industry top performers for this specific category. In the US, digital preorders for GTA 6 currently have a 148% lead over Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, which was formerly the fastest selling entertainment product. This comparison is proof of a shift in industry dominance towards open-world action genre for this specific product cycle.

With the current preorder numbers, analysts have predicted even higher initial launch period sales for the game. Previously, Piper Sandler expected the game to sell over 48 million units for the initial week at launch. With these estimates, it's clear the preorder success is only a precursor to an even larger commercial success.

Please note that all numbers reported here are estimates from Sensor Tower data, not actual sales numbers from Rockstar or Take-Two. At this time, there has been no official release from Rockstar or Take-Two, with verified numbers, on how much they've sold (or potentially sold) for digital preorders. However, the 6 million units/$594 million sales presented here are strong indicators of the market's reception for the product, until there is an official confirmation.
