Google Maps is adding agentic AI capabilities to its Ask Maps feature, which lets the app execute multi-step tasks instead of just answering simple questions. This shift matters because it turns the navigation tool into an active planner for trips, dining, and events. Users who rely on the app for daily logistics will now get more automated assistance rather than manual search results.

The update focuses on the Ask Maps interface, which serves as the primary command center for these new intelligent functions. Google is integrating this AI layer directly into the mapping experience to handle complex requests that span multiple services. The feature is designed to understand context and execute commands across different apps and data sources.

A major addition is the ability to order pickup meals directly through Square and Toast integrations, with Uber Eats support coming soon. The app can now compare real-time hotel prices and recommend local events with direct ticket purchase links. A new live transit widget displays real-time delays and updated departure times for public transport users.

Google is also introducing a Personal Intelligence feature that connects Gmail to provide context-aware recommendations based on existing reservations. Users can submit business updates conversationally or via storefront photos for automated detection of details like operating hours. Conversation history is retained if Maps history is enabled, allowing users to resume trip planning from where they left off.

The transit widget, conversation history, and personalized responses are rolling out worldwide where Ask Maps is available. Food ordering, hotel and event discovery, and conversational contributions are currently rolling out in the US. These features expand the utility of the app for travelers and local users alike.
