Google AI Search UK Opt-Out for Publishers Now Available Globally

Google is expanding its generative AI search features to comply with a UK regulatory mandate, allowing publishers to opt out of having their content used in AI-generated answers. The move follows a testing phase in the United Kingdom and will roll out globally as part of Google's commitment to meet competition authority requirements.

Publishers can exclude content from AI Overviews and Mode without losing organic rankings via a new Search Console toggle.

The update affects Google Search's AI Overviews and AI Mode features, which use generative AI to summarize search results. Publishers can now use a new toggle in Google Search Console to remove their content from these AI-generated summaries without affecting their organic search rankings.

Google must implement controls within nine months of the mandate and provide progress reports every six months for the first year. The company is required to attribute content properly with clear links in all AI-generated answers, ensuring publishers receive credit when their work is used.

The opt-out mechanism allows publishers to exclude their content from Google's generative AI search features while maintaining their visibility in standard organic results. This configuration ensures that publishers who do not want their content used for training or summarization can still benefit from traditional search traffic.

Google has stated that AI Overviews now serves over 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users. These figures are based on internal company data and have not been independently verified by third-party sources.

This compliance update follows earlier discussions between Google and the UK Competition and Markets Authority regarding the use of copyrighted content in generative AI search features. The global rollout builds on the framework established during the initial UK testing phase.
