Resident Evil Requiem is coming out to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise. But this isn't just a celebration, it's a change in direction and how CAPCOM views the future of their franchise. If you're a buyer or even a long time fan of the series, pay attention. This studio is establishing where the story for their horror IP will go in the next decade.
Executive producer Jun Takeuchi outlines the franchise's next decade
First, Executive Producer Jun Takeuchi said the branding for the first 10 years of the franchise is over. The next 10 years will be about ending it. That's a pretty direct indication of an end date to the game era we're in now, instead of just going on and on for who knows how long with the same story.
That doesn't mean the end is here, though. CAPCOM has confirmed they have plans for multiple new games in the future. Plus, they announced a remake of Resident Evil Veronica will be delayed until Fall of 2027. So even though they're changing how they're handling brand strategy, development is still ongoing.
And when it comes to AI, Takeuchi views it as a way to be more efficient, not a replacement for creativity. They aren't going to be, at the core, letting AI take over any creative decisions. But the idea is that it can help refine processes and still deliver the tone and quality that people associate with the series.
