The way players get into Xbox Cloud Gaming is evolving, as Microsoft is introducing a pay-as-you-go option that eliminates the need for a Game Pass subscription. The impact here is significant because it opens up streaming for players who would have had to subscribe on a monthly basis in the past. They can now just buy time to stream.
New prepaid tiers and monthly caps replace unlimited access for subscribers
The new system changes things by replacing unlimited cloud access for current subscribers with a set amount of time per month. The whole value proposition changes for all players.
It's still Xbox Cloud Gaming, but the payment system is now being upgraded. Users will have the ability to purchase prepaid hours in addition to the current subscription options. Microsoft has announced details on pricing for this new service that's coming.
Users will now have the ability to stream compatible games without having to have a Game Pass subscription. It's an entirely new way for those casual users who don't want to have a monthly subscription.
Microsoft is offering three prepaid options for direct purchase. The 10-hour package is $3.99 which comes out to $0.40 an hour. The 25-hour option is $7.99 which gives you $0.32 an hour.
The 50-hour option is $11.99. That gets you the lowest hourly price of $0.24. The hours you buy don't expire. You'll get the benefits of ad-free streaming, shorter wait times, and higher quality.
For current Game Pass subscribers, you'll have a time limit on cloud gaming per month. 15 hours a month for Ultimate. 10 hours a month for Premium. 5 hours a month for Essential. If you go beyond that, you can buy more hours with the prepaid options. You can still have an ad supported free session option but that's limited to 1 hour.
Xbox Insiders will get early access starting October 21, 2026. The general availability of the new payment option will start in November of 2026. Microsoft notes these prices are introductory so they could change after testing. We don't have details on regional pricing and availability for the prepaid options just yet.
We've been following Xbox Cloud Gaming closely. Previously we wrote about Microsoft Caps Xbox Cloud Gaming at 15 Hours for Ultimate. Having a pay-as-you-go option is a nice alternative for those players that don't necessarily fit into the standard subscription plans. It gives players the flexibility of having a set amount of time per month or just buying the hours you need.
