Google Fixes OLED Black Rendering Bug on Acer and Lenovo Laptops

Google has discovered a software glitch that is causing some Googlebook laptops with OLED screens to render colors as dark gray, rather than pure black. This is a visual degradation for those owners of these particular devices. Apparently it’s something that happens once the system is booted. Seems more like a configuration software error than a physical display error.

Software patch resolves washed out blacks on affected devices

The issue is found on the Acer and made Googlebook laptops. These laptops are using OLED panels which are finicky with the display driver settings. In particular, the defect is showing up in the inability to render true black pixels. In other words, the colors just look washed out, grayed out.

Google Community Expert Mishaal Rahman said that Google has tracked down the source of this problem. Google is supposedly going to come out with a fix for this soon. (That means a software patch that will be able to correct display output.)

Several of the same balancing/stability topics were brought up when we reported the last Googlebook update. In any event, this new fix is for a particular visual regression in the OLED implementation. If you have an affected Acer/Lenovo device, expect a software fix coming out for the gray screen problem.
