A new investigation reveals that AI GPUs are moving through supply chains in ways that bypass US export controls. This matters because it affects the availability of high-end hardware for researchers and the integrity of regulatory frameworks. The report highlights how restricted chips reach Chinese institutions despite official bans.

C4ADS investigation traces restricted chip diversion through Southeast Asian import networks

The investigation focuses on Megaspeed International, a Southeast Asian importer linked to the movement of these GPUs. C4ADS identified the company as a suspect due to its high import volume and opaque ownership structure. The firm processed approximately $4.6 billion in NVIDIA imports between 2022 and 2025.

Investigators traced $1.7 million in restricted chips directly to Chinese institutions and another $13.4 million through 50 shipments via Southeast Asia. The methods include direct purchases by Chinese research bodies and transshipment through opaque paper companies. These routes allow restricted hardware to bypass standard compliance checks.

We looked at Supermicro Employees Accused of Smuggling $2.5 in our earlier Nvidia coverage. This new report adds another layer to the ongoing issue of GPU smuggling in the region. The findings suggest that supply chain vulnerabilities remain significant despite increased scrutiny.

The report confirms that restricted NVIDIA AI GPUs are reaching China through complex import networks. It identifies specific financial volumes and shipping routes used to move these chips. The investigation does not claim that all $4.6 billion in imports reached China, but it highlights the risk of diversion.
