Kaleidescape released the Compact Terra Prime, a massive 246TB SSD media server designed for high-end home theaters. This hardware targets wealthy cinephiles who demand the ability to watch multiple 4K movies at the same time without buffering. The device brings enterprise-grade storage capacity into a compact form factor that fits into residential AV racks.
Enterprise-grade storage in a compact aluminum chassis for luxury home theaters
The server houses two 123TB enterprise-grade SSDs inside a chassis constructed entirely out of aluminum. Kaleidescape likely uses Solidigm D5-P5336 drives for this configuration, though the vendor has not confirmed the specific SSD model. The unit weighs just 4 pounds and measures 7.87 x 1.52 x 10 inches, making it significantly smaller than traditional rack-mounted storage solutions.
Specifications
- Storage Capacity: 246TB
- Drive Configuration: 2x 123TB enterprise-grade SSDs
- Simultaneous Streams: 25
- Movie Capacity: 2,300 4K cinematic movies
- Network Interface: 2.5 Gbps Ethernet
Kaleidescape promises the device can download a 4K movie in just 4 minutes if you saturate its throughput. It supports up to 25 simultaneous 4K streams and stores up to 2,300 4K cinematic movies. The hardware connects via a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port and maintains a maximum noise level of 20 dB to ensure quiet operation in living spaces.
We did not get a price for the 246TB model, but Kaleidescape didn't reveal an MSRP. The company's previous 120TB SSD server currently costs $34,995, so we estimate the new unit will likely cost $150,000 or more. The Compact Terra Prime is available now via select partners on a made-to-order basis.
We looked at high-end home theater servers earlier while tracking luxury media storage trends. This new device represents a shift toward dense, quiet, and fast storage for users who prioritize convenience and capacity over raw cost efficiency.
