Afterburner developer Alexey Nicolaychuk has revived the GPUProbe plugin to expose sensors that standard software cannot reach. This update matters because has ignored requests for official documentation on these hidden readings. Enthusiasts can finally monitor hardware details that were previously inaccessible without custom workarounds.

Tool uses I2C bus to expose VRAM temperatures and 12VHPWR pin data

The revived GPUProbe plugin integrates directly with MSI Afterburner to bypass standard MMIO limitations. It uses I2C bus communication to talk to arbitrary devices connected to the GPU. This includes VRM controllers, monitoring chips, and onboard microcontrollers that standard tools ignore.

The tool now exposes individual VRAM module temperatures and GPU hotspot readings. It also monitors current across individual 12VHPWR power pins on compatible hardware. The example configuration triggers a binary alarm if current on a single pin exceeds 12A or if the difference between any two pins exceeds 5.5A.

GPUProbe can explore undocumented sensors on Ampere, Ada, and Blackwell GPUs. The graphics card must still include the required monitoring hardware for these features to work. The developer has not shared a download link, and integration may be limited by agreements between MSI and NVIDIA.

NVIDIA has not published the documentation needed to expose some of these readings through a more conventional implementation. Nicolaychuk stated that the company ignored their inquiry about future plans. The plugin remains aimed at enthusiasts comfortable with custom configuration until an official release path emerges.
