Apple is shifting its augmented reality strategy. The company plans to replace the Vision Pro lineup with smart glasses aimed at a broader audience. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the Vision Pro is no longer in active development.
First-generation glasses launch in 2027
The first-generation smart glasses will launch in 2027. These will be display-less devices focused on mass-market appeal. A version with an interactive display is not expected until 2029.
The glasses may run different operating systems depending on whether they connect to a Mac or an iPhone. Apple reportedly fears the glasses could receive lackluster reception similar to the Vision Pro.
Analyst Kuo details roadmap overhaul
Kuo states that the Apple XR headset and smart glasses roadmap he compiled about a year ago is no longer useful. Only two smart glasses products remain visible in the current roadmap. The major overhaul was signed off by Apple's next CEO, John Ternus.
Pricing details are not yet available. The glasses are expected to launch globally, with the first model arriving in 2027 and the display-equipped version following in 2029.
Apple's move to smart glasses marks a significant shift from the Vision Pro. The company is betting on a lighter, more accessible form factor to attract mainstream users. The strategy's success hinges on the market performance of the glasses.
