The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening comes to the PC in a way that's native and doesn't require emulators thanks to a new fan project for Nintendo fans. It's called LAS Recomp and brings the native experience to , macOS, and users.

Fan project LAS Recomp converts Switch game to native desktop application

This is a big deal because it means we can play The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening directly on modern systems in a way that might be more stable and perform better than using traditional emulators.

LAS Recomp is taking the 2019 Nintendo Switch game and making it a standalone app for your desktop operating system. The way that it does this is by using static recompilation to convert the original game code to run on your native system. That means it's like a direct port and not an emulator where the code is getting translated on the fly.

You can play with unlocked aspect ratios to get ultrawide displays that show more of the game. On Windows you can use Bilinear upscaling. And on your macOS system you can use Apple MetalFX upscaling.

As for input support, you can use your keyboard. Or game controllers from Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. All the buttons can be remapped to what you want.

The way LAS Recomp was developed is also pretty interesting because it's using a lot of artificial intelligence to help with the technical parts. Most of the code, tools, and repository docs in LAS Recomp were written by Anthropic's Claude AI. But the human devs have been directing, testing, and reviewing AI created code to make sure it's of high quality and works as intended.

The source material mentions a Nintendo PC release for 2026 and that's very different from what this fan project is doing right now. LAS Recomp isn't connected to an official Nintendo release or anything like that. If you want to play The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on the PC right now, you'll need to use this unofficial port.
