AMD's FSR 4.1 upscaling technology could give the Xbox Series X a performance advantage over the base PlayStation 5, according to a report from Moore's Law Is Dead. The YouTuber claims the Xbox Series X's higher raw compute power and better SDK support may allow it to run FSR 4.1 at a higher quality level than Sony's console.
Xbox Series X delivers over double the INT8 performance of PS5
The Xbox Series X delivers 48.6 TOPS of INT8 performance, more than double the base PS5's 20.6 TOPS. The Xbox Series S offers 16.0 TOPS, while the Steam Deck manages 6.4 TOPS. The PS5 Pro dominates with 300 TOPS but relies on Sony's own PSSR technology rather than FSR.
Moore's Law Is Dead said that Xbox's SDK already includes plugins for FSR 3 and later versions, while Sony stopped updating its FSR plugins at version 2.2. This means Sony would need to add support for newer FSR versions to enable FSR 4.1 on the PS5. The source believes FSR 4.1 could come to current-gen consoles, but the outcome is not guaranteed.
The source noted that the Xbox Series X will not match the PS5 Pro's PSSR 2 boost, but it could still see a nice improvement. There is a chance the Xbox Series X could run a higher quality mode of FSR 4.1 than the PS5, giving Microsoft's console a clear advantage next year. AMD has not confirmed FSR 4.1's console availability or release timing.
