Update adds custom closed captions

The new build targets Beta, Experimental, and Release Preview channels. Microsoft told media that development of Media Player has not stopped, despite a recent lack of major new features. The company said the absence of visible changes led to a misunderstanding that the app was neglected.

Third-party testing by Windows Latest reveals a significant memory increase. The new version uses about 377 MB of RAM when idle, which is 3.64 times more than the old version's 103.4 MB. The testers also found that the new Media Player still has a delay when opening videos via double-click, while VLC and the old Windows Media Player open the same video almost instantly.

The update adds custom closed captions that now follow the system's caption settings. Microsoft continues to ship the app to Insiders across multiple channels. Users on the stable channel will likely receive the update after further testing.
