White House Considers Mandatory Government Vetting of AI Models Before Release

The Trump administration is in early discussions about an executive order that would require mandatory government vetting of AI models before public release, according to reports.

Proposed order would create a tech-government working group

The proposed order would create a working group of tech executives and government officials. White House staff recently briefed leaders from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI on the plans. Potential oversight would involve the NSA, the White House Office of the National Cyber Director, and the Director of National Intelligence.

The White House is considering an executive order for AI model vetting.

The model under consideration resembles the UK’s AI Security Institute approach. Anthropic’s Mythos model, which is capable of finding thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities, may have catalyzed these discussions, though no sources have confirmed that link.

The White House said in a statement that participants discussed opportunities for collaboration and shared approaches to address challenges associated with scaling AI technology. However, venture capitalist David Sacks criticized Anthropic, accusing it of running a regulatory capture strategy based on fear-mongering and harming the startup ecosystem.

The New York Times, Washington Examiner, and CSO Online reported on the discussions. It remains unclear whether the executive order will be finalized or when it might take effect.
