Valve has released official computer-aided design files for the Steam Controller on Gitlab. The company made these resources available to the public under a Creative Commons license. This move opens the door for community members to create custom modifications for the device.
The published files include models in both STP and STL formats. Valve states that these specific file types are intended to simplify the development of third-party accessories. The designs cover the main controller unit as well as its accompanying puck.
The Steam Controller originally launched at a price of 99 USD. The device features two square trackpads to assist with mouse pointer control. It also includes a puck that functions as a magnetic charger and wireless transmitter.
Valve explicitly warns that any damage resulting from user modifications voids the product warranty. The company plans to release CAD files for the Steam Machine at a later date. This allows enthusiasts to build custom grips, covers, or holders without needing to reverse-engineer the hardware.
Valve has not confirmed a specific launch window for the Steam Machine CAD files.
