PC gamers and emulator users now have a new way to upgrade legacy visuals without hunting for individual mods. The developer imissanyway released the first public build of UNCANNY, a real-time neural remastering engine that works across multiple platforms. This single runtime replaces the need for game-specific remaster patches, offering a unified solution for visual enhancement. Developer releases public build for global testing

UNCANNY integrates DLSS 5 neural rendering to process images in real time. The software runs on modern PC games and the PCSX2 PlayStation 2 emulator. It includes an experimental asset reconstruction system called REVENANT to help rebuild game assets. The project aims to provide one consistent engine rather than scattered, individual modifications. This approach simplifies the workflow for users who want to upgrade older titles.

The engine uses a reconstruction pipeline with 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 pass modes. This multipass system avoids stacking the same full DLSS pass repeatedly. The first pass does most of the work while later passes refine the image. UNCANNY also includes motion and ghosting protection to stabilize the output. These technical choices aim to improve efficiency and visual consistency.

Early comparisons show significant improvements in face detail and lighting for specific titles. Games with realistic aesthetics like Marvel's Spider-Man benefit the most from the engine. Other titles, such as 007 From Russia With Love, also see notable upgrades. The project is currently in early alpha and has plenty of issues. Compatibility with older DirectX games remains a known problem at this stage.

UNCANNY is available for global testing through the project's GitHub repository. We looked at similar neural upscaling projects earlier while tracking software developments in this space. Users can download the build to test the engine on their own systems. The tool remains a work in progress with ongoing compatibility challenges.
