Fab 21 generated $514 million in profit last year, according to Yeh Chun-Hsien, Taiwan National Development Council Minister. The expansion faces challenges including water scarcity, labor shortages, visa issues, and regulatory compliance.
The water recycling infrastructure status at Fab 21 remains unclear. TSMC has not confirmed whether the necessary systems are already in place.
The expansion is part of TSMC's broader strategy to increase its manufacturing footprint outside Taiwan. The Arizona site is one of the company's key overseas projects.
