Strava changed its developer program on June 1, 2026, and the move has angered the open-source community. The platform now requires a paid subscription for API access, effectively putting a paywall on third-party apps.

New developer tiers introduced

The new program introduces two tiers: Standard and Extended Access. Standard Tier developers must have a paid Strava subscription. New developers face the requirement immediately; existing developers have until June 30 before the paywall applies. Strava is offering three months free to ease the transition.

Strava says the change responds to a surge in API abuse. Developer applications have jumped 448% year-to-date, driven by AI companies scraping data and routing it through intermediaries. Apps that pass data through third-party platforms are no longer supported.

Community backlash and comparisons

The paywall affects all developers, not just abusers. Hobbyists building free, self-hosted tools for personal data analysis now need a subscription to access their own data via the API. On Reddit's r/selfhosted, users compared the move to Reddit's 2023 API changes. One developer said the announcement kills their open-source Strava dashboard project.

Wearable and device integrations are not affected. Garmin, Amazfit, Coros, and other devices will continue syncing normally. Strava is also launching an official MCP, an AI-native tool for subscribers to analyze their own data without coding skills.

The change takes effect immediately for new developers. Existing developers have until June 30 to comply. Strava's three-month free offer provides a short grace period, but the long-term impact on the developer ecosystem remains unclear.
