Stranger Than Heaven Replaces Heat Moves With Stamina Combat

Ryu ga Gotoku Studio has revealed a new direction for its upcoming title Stranger Than Heaven during Summer Game Fest 2026. The studio showcased a combat demo that fundamentally shifts the fighting mechanics away from traditional trigger-based inputs. This change replaces the series' signature Heat Moves with a stamina-driven system centered on shoulder buttons.

Summer Game Fest demo highlights Makoto's stamina-driven fighting mechanics

The game places players in control of Makoto, who navigates conflicts across three distinct periods of Japanese history. The demo stripped away side quests to focus entirely on these core combat sequences. Players will encounter enemies whose responsiveness depends directly on their own stamina management.

Stranger Than Heaven introduces a combat loop where both the protagonist and opponents share stamina pools. These shared resources dictate how effectively attacks land and counters succeed. The studio describes this as the first title from Ryu ga Gotoku Studio to build its fighting system around shoulder buttons rather than triggers.

The title is scheduled for release on January 15th, 2027. It will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. Players on Xbox will receive day one access through Game Pass.
