Sony PS6 Launch Timing Undecided Due to Memory Shortages

PlayStation 5 hardware sales exceed forecasts with 15.9 million units sold

The delay comes as Sony reports strong financial results for its current generation. Hardware sales for the PlayStation 5 reached 15.9 million units in fiscal year 2025. This figure exceeded the company's initial forecast of 15 million units. Total shipments of the PS5 have now reached 93.7 million units globally. The PlayStation Plus service also saw growth, with monthly active users hitting 125 million in March.

Sony recorded total sales of $82.8 billion for fiscal year 2025. The company reported an operating income of $9.6 billion during this period. A significant portion of this financial landscape was impacted by a nearly $800 million impairment loss on Bungie assets. Looking ahead, Sony forecasts a 6 percent decline in sales for fiscal year 2026. Operating income is expected to rise by 30 percent despite the lower sales volume.

The projected drop in fiscal year 2026 sales stems from lower expected PS5 unit sales. Operating income growth is driven by other business segments offsetting the gaming hardware slowdown. The Gaming and Network Services segment expects flat operating income compared to the previous year. This stability excludes one-time items and accounts for increased investments in PlayStation 6 development.

Sony continues to navigate supply chain challenges while managing its transition to the next console generation. The memory shortage remains a primary obstacle for finalizing the PS6 schedule. The company has not provided further details on how it plans to mitigate these supply constraints. Investors will monitor how these hardware delays impact long-term market positioning.
