Sony Embraces Generative AI for Game Development as Largest Publisher

Sony has announced a broad generative AI strategy for game development, positioning itself as the largest publisher to openly embrace the technology. The initiative spans multiple divisions, including Sony Pictures, which invested over $50 million in AI capabilities, and Sony Music, which is pursuing an industry-wide standard for labeling AI-generated content.

PlayStation CEO details AI tools

PlayStation CEO Nishino Hideaki detailed specific AI tools, including Mockingbird for facial animation and an AI hair animation tool. Mockingbird is already adopted at Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio, and may be used in MLB The Show 26. Sony and Bandai Namco are collaborating on generative AI in video production, reporting massive gains in speed and productivity per person.

Sony Group CEO Hiroki Totoki stated that human creativity must remain at the center, describing AI as an amplifier of human imagination and a catalyst for new possibilities, not a replacement for artists. Hideaki added that AI is a powerful tool to help Sony achieve its goal of being the best place to play and publish.

The announcement comes months after Larian faced backlash over AI in game development. Sony's strategy emphasizes augmenting human creativity rather than replacing it, though the company has not confirmed specific timelines for broader AI tool deployment across its studios.
